Several people answered Pigeon's Ranch, which is the building that appears in the photo. The photo was actually taken from Sharpshooter's Ridge, looking down at Pigeon's. The answer was available in photos in the Battlefield Preservation section of the website.

CONTEST #5 - APACHE CANYON

CONTEST #6 - THE GUNS OF VALVERDE
Question: How many guns and of what type were in the original Valverde Battery (before it was captured by the Confederates)?
(Bonus: What specific type of field (light artillery) battery was this meant to be, had it had all the correct guns?)
Answer: Use your mouse to highlight the lines below to see the winning answer.

McRae's Battery was intended to be a 6-lb battery (answer to the bonus question), which should have had four 6-lb field guns and two 12-lb field howitzers. Only three 6-lb guns were available, so a mountain howitzer was substituted for the fourth. Therefore the battery captured at Valverde consisted of three 6-lb field guns, two 12-lb field howitzers, and one 12-lb mountain howitzer.

Jeff Hayes was the winner.

CONTEST #7 - PICACHO PASS
Question: In the spring of 1862 (and in every spring wet enough), what wildflower made a spectacular display in Picacho Pass?
(Bonus: Why is Picacho Peak like shrimp scampi?)
Answer: Use your mouse to highlight the lines below to see the winning answer.

Poppies; specifically, the Mexican Golden Poppy.

Answer to the bonus question: Picacho Peak is a redundant name, "Picacho" being Spanish for peak. Shrimp scampi is similarly redundant, as "scampi" is Italian for shrimp. Nobody got this one!

Three correct answers were sent in. Jack Waldorf was the winner of the drawing.

(Bonus: What other New Mexico location was temporarily called "Thorn"?)
Answer: Use your mouse to highlight the lines below to see the winning answer.
