TREVANION T. TEEL

Trevanion T. Teel, who became the Confederate Army of New Mexico's artillery commander, was a veteran of the Mexican War twice wounded at the Battle of Buena Vista. During the New Mexico Campaign he was wounded slightly at the Battle Valverde. Major Teel is remembered for burying cannon along the route of retreat from New Mexico, including eight mountain howitzers that were concealed in Albuquerque and later relocated by Teel. He survived the campaign and went on to become a famous criminal defense lawyer whose clients included John Wesley Harden. He died in relative poverty in El Paso.
