Big news on the Glorieta Battlefield Preservation front! See full details below.

RED RIVER is now in bookstores. The official launch for the book will be at Page One Books on Wednesday, September 3, at 7:00 pm. The New Mexico Territorial Brass Band will perform, and uniformed reenactors will present a display of Civil War cannon and other weapons. I hope to see many of you there!

A sample chapter of RED RIVER is now on the website. Follow the link to the RED RIVER section under "Books." Also new on the website, by popular demand, is a Cast of Characters for GLORIETA PASS. This is a long list and includes characters who are only mentioned briefly. It identifies which characters are fictional and which were real people. I hope to post similar lists for the rest of the series in the future.

GLORIETA BATTLEFIELD PRESERVATION - WRITE LETTERS NOW!

The Glorieta Battlefield Coalition's request for a $750,000 study and EIS to review alternatives to NM50 through the Glorieta Battlefield has passed intact through the Transportation Committee and is included in the current FY2004 Transportation Bill's Federal Lands Highways Program (FLHP). This request will be included in the Transportation Bill that could voted on by the full House of Representatives as early as next week.

YOU CAN HELP make sure this federal money is secured for the EIS regarding options to reroute NM50 and restore the Santa Fe Trail and the Civil War Glorieta Battlefield within Pigeon's Ranch. The money, if approved by Congress, would be directed to the Park Service in 2004 and will allow NPS to begin a formal, public process and engineering feasibility analysis in conjunction with the state transportation department and concerned/effected citizens.

PLEASE WRITE A FEW LETTERS - The more voices showing support for this study, the more likely it is to remain in the Transportation Bill. Be sure to reference the FY2004 Transportation Bill's Federal Lands Highways Program (FLHP). (Note - please fax your letters due to the delays associated with the screening of U.S. Mail to members of Congress.)

TOM UDALL - Please call and write Congressman Udall and thank him for including Glorieta in the Transportation Bill.
